Bird Watching - Black Hooded Oriole

Black Hooded Oriole

Golden yellow bird with jet black head and upper breast. Back in wings and tails. Bills pink, eyes crimson. Sexes are alike but black of head duller in females. Young birds have yellow forehead and the black head streaked with yellowish.

Local Names: Manjakaruppan (Malayalam)
                    Peelak Zardak (Hindi)

Orioles can be hard to see as they forage deep in thick vegetation and even on the ground. The black hooded oriole lives in common contact with humans in rural and urban India.

Food- Insects fruits and berries and flower nectar
Nest is beautifully woven deep cup of grass and bast fibers bound with cobweb, suspended hammock wise in fork of leaf twig 4-10 cm up. Eggs are somewhat smaller; more pinkish , less glossy. Both sex shares all domestic duties.

These pictures are taken at my Mother in laws family house in Kerala.  There is a lot of trees with fruits, which attracts all these birds. Every visit, i spot a new bird :)
